Funerals

Recently, a good friend of mine lost his father and it made me think about how important life is. It brought me back to an article I read about how important “the dash” is in your life. The dash is the dash used on your tombstone between the year you were born and the year of your death.

We all know that we only get one opportunity in this life, and we all want to maximize our time here, but how we fill “the dash” should be important to all of us. How do you want others to remember you? Do you want a lot of people at your funeral? Do you want them to talk about how giving you were or how impactful your life has been in the lives of others? What do you want people to say about your life and “your dash”?

I think it’s good to take some time to think about these questions and think through what you are doing today to get the kind of answers you want in the future. If you want a lot of people at your funeral, are you pouring yourself into others? If you want to be known as a giver, are you giving now? This exercise can have a great impact on your actions and point you to where you should be spending your time and energy. Also, when you are answering these questions, break down exactly what core values are important to you. Once you have broken down those core values, I don’t think any of them will be money related. They will be relationship related and hopefully service to other related.

One final thought on funerals – do you know what happens after the last date on your tombstone? What happens after you die? If you don’t know, I would challenge you to do your research and figure that out. I am confident in the research that I have done and I am confident in where I am going to spend eternity. It is because of this confidence that I can call death a “graduation”. I am going to a better place. I get to be with the Creator of the universe because of something He did on my behalf to account for my sins.
